Neil deGrasse Tyson talks about his personal beliefs in this agnostic speech. While Tyson would rather not have his beliefs categorized at all, he says the word that best describes his thoughts on religion and the afterlife is agnostic. He is open to believing anything that can be proven, and if proof of God exists, he would be open to that. However, it currently doesn't.
Tyson describes the difference between agnostics and atheists, saying that atheists have the desire to actively debate with others. Tyson describes them as being very "in your face." Agnostics, on the other hand, are unconvinced by religion, but don't care enough about it to debate with others.
Tyson doesn't like being placed into a particular philosophy, because once someone says "I'm an agnostic" or "I'm an atheist," others assume they know what that person's beliefs are. People are too complicated to be categorized.
