Penn Jillette discusses the way that The Bible and other religious texts actually create atheists in this religious texts speech. Jillette is an atheist, but he grew up in a religious home and attended a youth group that required him to read The Bible from cover to cover.
Jillette explains that the content of The Bible (and the Koran, and the Torah) can actually convert people to atheism due to the violent and sometimes ridiculous nature of these texts. He talks about The Bible's violent attitude towards homosexuals, as well as its acceptance of slavery. After reading The Bible in its entirety, Jillette knew he was an atheist and began trying to convert other teens, which was when he was asked to leave his youth group.
Jillette talks about the comfort he felt discovering that there were out of the closet atheists like himself in the spotlight.
