Anant Agarwal advocates a new method of learning in his MOOC speech. MOOC stands for Massive Open Online Courses -- classes that are open to hundreds of students from around the world all at once with no restrictions on attendance and freedom in learning and creativity.
Argarwal is an MIT professor who has had great success in running these MOOC courses. He explains that online courses are more in tune with how the Millenial (born in the late nineties to 2000) generation interacts and learns. They have grown up with the Internet, texting, etc, so MOOC courses could be seamlessly integrated into their lives.
Argarwal’s MOOC speech argues for an overhaul of the traditional education system, which has remained the same for centuries -- a teacher lecturing to students in a classroom. Massive open online courses offer the opportunity for students to teach each other and to solve problems without the need of an authoritative instructor.
