Roger Martin discusses how innovation prospers in his illogical thinking keynote.
To culminate innovation, the words "prove it" must be relinquished from a company’s vocabulary according to Martin. It's understood that for something to work it requires evidence. There are two pieces of logic that individuals revert to when it comes to proving a statement: deductive logic and inductive. Those two forms of logic restrict the possibilities for innovation. Through these lines of understanding, a set of guidelines and predicted outcomes are expected.
For innovation to culminate, individuals are required to recognize a different form of logic. Abductive logic is a necessary step towards innovation. Through this line of thinking the possibilities for an unperceived outcome is introduced. Illogical thinking is how innovation takes place.
