This Cynthia Kenyon Keynote Discusses Hormones that Speed Up Aging
Andrew Robertson — July 3, 2012 — Keynote Trends
Like something out of science fiction, this Cynthia Kenyon keynote illustrates that the ability to slow down the aging process could be an upcoming development. The expert of bio chemistry and physics discusses how a mutated Daf-2 gene (hormone receptor regulating the amount of insulin and IGF-1 that enters a cell) resulted in prolonged lifespans and reduced age-related diseases. The discovery was initially made in C.elegan worms but similar results were found in mosquitoes, mice and humans.
The discovery alludes to the possibility that insulin and IGF-1 (promotes cell growth) may also be responsible for the rate at which a person ages. If the Daf-2 gene could somehow be manipulated to restrict the amount of hormones it allows into a cell, then perhaps the ability to prolong life will soon be possible.
