The Joseph Cabrera talks on social capital discuss how rapid urbanization negatively affects the quality of human connection. His previous studies further examined differences in social capital between urbanist and suburban areas.
Currently based out of California, the speaker works as an assistant professor of sociology in the University of La Verne's Social Science Department. His published articles on urban studies appeared in a number of academic journals such as Environment and Behavior, Housing Policy Debate and Journal of Planning Education and Research. His recent research analyze how urban planning and architecture influence social networks and ideas of reciprocity and trust. This concept is related to the content discussed in the Joseph Cabrera talk. He is also working on an urban revivalist project in South Scranton, Pennsylvania that looks at social capital in ethnically diverse communities.
