Ben Dunlap's speeches reveal the importance of passion and education in life. While many speakers address such themes, Dunlap draws on a richly textured tapestry of anecdotes from his personal interwoven into historically-informed narratives that provide for well-crafted, thoughtful reflections on what is important in life.
Dunlap began his studies at the University of the South (Sewanee). He later went on to attend Oxford, first as an undergraduate studying English and then later as a Rhodes scholar. In 1967, Dunlap earned a Ph.D from Harvard in English and literature.
From Dunlap's accomplished student career blossomed a distinguished professional one. He has held posts at Harvard, the University of South Carolina and has lectured throughout Europe and across Asia. Since July 2000, Dunlap has been the president of Wofford College.
In addition to his academic accomplishments, Dunlap has published poetry, anthologies, opera libretti and guides. This passion for and dedication to learning has not gone unnoticed.
Dunlap's alma mater, the University of the South, presented him with an honory degree in 2006. In 2010, he received the South Carolina Governor's Award in the Humanities. For anyone who has seen keynotes by Ben Dunlap, it is apparent these awards are well deserved.
