Tavares has been involved in improv since 1985, obtaining a BFA in acting from USC and an MFA in directing from the University of Nebraska. In 1995, he collaborated with friends to start 'The Have Nots!,' an improv group that has performed in 1,400 shows over the past 18 years. In fact, 'The Have Nots!' are considered to be the longest running act in Charleston.
In 2000, Tavares and his improv team founded 'Theatre 99,' a theater that considers itself "Charleston's Home for Improv Comedy." The theater regularly puts on original improv shows, as well as sketch comedy, stand up, cabaret and musical entertainment. Tavares was also responsible for curating and writing the curriculum for Theater 99's educational training program.
Tavares also authored 'Improv for Everyone,' a collection of tips and exercises for aspiring improv comics.
