Tiffany Kagure Mugo and Siphumeze Khundayi, two sex educators, recently delivered a talk on sex positivity for a TED audience, to show them how ideas surrounding the topic have changed over time, and to discuss improvements that still need to be made for the benefit of all parties.
Firstly, the two touch on how a person's beliefs and culture can shape their perception of sex, and how this has contributed to a culture of fear around it. Many of these notions are buried deeply, and have put much of the blame on women and their bodies.
Carrying on, the two show how different cultures are evolving to be sex-positive, and focus on the sanctification of women, rather than the objectification of them. With these many different stories, the two reveal the constant power struggle that goes into subverting sexuality, and that education is key in reconceptualizing the topic so that people can feel safe, liberated, and empowered in their choices.
Throughout their talk on sex positivty, Tiffany Kagure Mugo and Siphumeze Khundayi discuss the ways in which the ideas that so many have about sex can be opened up, with the negative and repressive ideas around it cast aside to make room for a space that's focused on true human desire and need.
