Tristan Harris, a former Design Ethicist at Google and the leader of Time Well Spent, starts out his talk on manipulation by explaining some of the recent ways that Internet-based companies have evolved to increase their market shares. One example that he gives of this is the Autoplay feature, which aims to suck consumers into the content they watch so that they spend more time on a website.
As Harris reveals in his talk on manipulation, all of these changes have been made in response to psychological studies, which have enabled tech companies to prey on consumers in a sense. By exploring the different ways in which these companies do this, Harris considers how one can protect themselves, and highlights the changes that need to be made within the industry to hold companies accountable for their actions.
