In Beau Lotto's perception talk, the neuroscientist and entrepreneur theorizes about the nature of perception — at least, he very likely does. His talk opens with a bold but definitive answer to the age old question of whether people perceive the world as it really is; by Lotto's estimation, we most certainly do not.
Despite its contentiousness, at even the most basic level its clear that perception is subjective. For example, a trained mathematician would perceive a complex string of equations completely differently from a 10-year-old, and a native Russian speaker would see a message written in Cyrillic whereas an English speaker would just see vaguely familiar symbols. Lotto's talk delves deeper than these superficialities, though, explaining how the human brain has evolved such that its impossible to perceive the world as it really is on a physical level.
