Conducting his Internet freedom speech via a telepresence robot, Edward Snowden’s talk about government surveillance and the right to data privacy and its laws is riveting.

“Your rights matter because you never know when you’re going to need them,” says Snowden from the robotic screen as he hides out for his security in a remote location in Russia.

The former CIA analyst known for leaking evidence from the National Security Agency informs viewers in his internet freedom speech that “some of the most important reporting is yet to come,” and that Americans should be worried about their privacy.

He explains that in proper democratic societies people should be able to trust their governments for not snooping in their lives by using terrorism as an excuse to gather citizen data.

“Trusting any government authority with the entirety of human communications without any oversight is too great a temptation to be ignored,” says Snowden.
