Spencer West’s Inspirational Story Tells Us to Keep Going
Alyson Wyers — September 18, 2013 — Keynote Trends
At last year’s We Day Toronto, Spencer West shared his inspirational story of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to raise awareness and funds for clean water projects in East Africa—despite not having legs. The double amputee climbed the African mountain on his hands and on his wheelchair with the help of his two best friends, Alex Meers and David Johnson.
Spencer West encouraged the crowd of 20,000 empowered youth to keep moving forward with their own missions of social good. He also spoke to the need to ask for help, something he learned last summer. He told a stunned audience that the first time he wished he had legs was when his friends and support team become overwhelmed with altitude sickness. It was his turn to support them, and as a team they eventually reached the summit.
His inspirational story served as a reminder to redefine possible and remember we don’t have to believe it when we’re told something is impossible.
