Farmer Microinsurance

Rose Goslinga, founder of Kilimo Salama, speaks about a new agricultural insurance model that gives farmers the ability to invest more and to expand their business while risking less. While traditional farmers' insurance relies on multiple visits, Kilimo Salama implements innovative and low-cost methods in order to save farmers money. Weather stations measure rain fall and determine whether certain drought conditions result in a payout.

In the case of a drought, farmers in Kenya and Tanzania will not have to worry about paying back their loans. Kilimo Salama is Kenya’s largest microinsurance program, which tranalates to "safe farming” in Swahili. Farmers can obtain this insurance by direct purchase or with the aid of microfinance institutions. This new method of agricultural insurance allows farmers to expand their enterprise without having to worry about the unpredictable nature of climate and weather conditions.
