Franis Flynn's incentives to ask speech explores why so many people hesitate to ask others for help and what they lose out on as a result. The university professor explains that the reason why so many people avoid asking friends, family or co-workers for help is because they fear being turned down or judged. People usually underestimate the willingness of others to positively respond to their requests for assistance.
Flynn and his colleagues completed a variety of studies on the topic and found that people are much more inclined to to ask others for help when they are confident that they will receive a positive answer. People want to avoid the feelings of rejection and maximize the benefits of attaining cooperation.
