In this insightful talk with Academy Award-winning actor Geena Davis, she talks about her organization, the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media. She shares her opinions on why it is important for society that there be more empowering images of women in the media.
She reveals that 80 percent of the media consumed worldwide is made in the United States, and that the country isn’t doing a very good job of the way they depict women to the rest of the world. One study her organization completed showed that in PG and G-rated films, very few of the female characters presented in them had any occupational duties at all.
Geena Davis makes the argument that young girls viewing this kind of media won’t see opportunities for themselves, and advocates that the media incorporate more images of empowered women.
