Dr. Leana Wen's doctor keynote brings to light what type of information isn't being disclosed between patients and medical practitioners. Behind closed doors patients are often left in the dark about many of the factors that play into how doctors recommend treatment for patients.
According to Wen, many doctors are secretly spokesmen for drug companies, advocating treatments based on personal preference or looking to keep a large the gap between themselves and their patients. Wen says this is because many doctors are scared to be fully transparent to their patients. "We don't just have a fear of sickness," Wen says, "we have a sickness of fear. Can we bridge this disconnect between what patients need and what doctors do?"
While Wen has received a massive amount of backlash for speaking out, she radically believes patients have a right to know the deciding factors behind medical decisions that doctors are currently not required to disclose.
