Diversity of Leadership

Jody Greenstone Miller begins her diverse leadership talk with a criticism. She argues that women, such as Facebook's chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg, are pontificating old ideas in a new way. To be more specific, Miller argues that Sandberg is continuing Matina Horner's theory that women are experiencing an internal block when it comes to pursuing success. Miller acknowledges that this is a perfectly valid and very real issue; however, she thinks a bigger, more problematic aspect is the way the institutions are organized.

The path of leadership that one is required to take in order to become successful tips the scales to favor a certain type of person, one who doesn't mind making personal sacrifices across the many different categories that make up our lives.

Miller calls for a diversity of leadership, which goes beyond gender and race. However, to get there, we have to create alternative paths to leadership that are not currently represented in our inflexible, rigid corporations. By doing so, we will expand the talent pool and diversify the values we're bringing to the table.
