Social Stitching for Change

The community building talk given by Marie Schacht introduces the concept of social stitching. This idea uses the sewing action as a metaphor for creating stronger connections, relationships and communities. Schacht speaks to a disconnect in society that can be eliminated through social stitching, while also making the world a better place.

Schacht defines social stitching as a group of techniques that allow someone to create connections between resources, people and places to strengthen relationships and encouraging social change. These techniques consist of tools and equipment including citizenship, problem-solving and optimism. She identifies three basic stitches: joining, mending and creating. The social quilt brings together different fabrics to make a difference. While she admits social stitching is a basic concept in her community-building talk, Schacht also notes it's one that is missing.
