TJ Duane's Networking Lecture Offers Advice and Tips for Introverts
Alyson Wyers — September 25, 2013 — Keynote Trends
In his networking lecture, TJ Duane offers tips on how to expand one's professional network. The MBA Candidate self-identifies as an extrovert and gives tips for introverts to network more effectively while also outlining potential mistakes for other extroverts. This follows the common adage in the business world, "It's not what you know, but who you know."
The networking lecture has five main points with a 'lifeline' for introverts and a 'land mine' for extroverts. The five pieces of advice are meant to establish real relationships where both parties provide value. Establishing a common connection should be done early on, but without making assumptions to soon. Being centered or present in the conversation is important, while focusing on the other person and using their name. To know what value the person can offer to you, listening to their story is important. To gauge this, it is good to ask sincere questions, but not too many. On the other hand, it's important to demonstrate your own value by sharing your experiences without bragging. Lastly, following up and following through are vital, especially if there is a part of the conversation where you can add immediate value without over-promising and under-delivering.
