Fighting Every Aspect of Inequality

Bernie Sanders' commencement speech at Brooklyn College had the same tone and passion with which Sanders conducts himself on a regular basis, speaking against the inequality he has spent his life trying to fight.

Sanders' opinions on a variety of civil rights, economic, and healthcare issues have been made clear by the politician his entire life, and in his rise to national and global fame in the past two years his voice has only grown louder. He reiterates the many issues that America currently faces, and his unique perspective in why he fights for people outside of the 1%, as well as those who face injustice. As the Jewish son of a man who had escaped the Holocaust, with many family members who weren't able to, Sanders understands horrors of the racism right-wing extremism, and nationalism that can be seen rising in the U.S. today. As someone who grew up in a family under financial strain, Sanders also understands the struggle of the millions of people in the U.S. who are not able to feed their families, pay their bills, save up for an education or retirement, and pay for adequate health care. It is these experiences that drive him to speak passionately about the issues that currently exist in the U.S.

Although painting quite a dire picture of the current state of U.S. politics, Sanders encourages the graduates to stand up for democracy, fight back, and create a government that works for all, rather than throwing their hands up in despair.
