According to Christopher McDougall, humans are born for barefoot running. He theorizes that our ancestors did not evolve with the advantage of speed, saying that "Usain Bolt can get his ass kicked by a squirrel," but instead hunted for food by barefoot running after animals for long distances.
Chris thinks that humans as a tribe would engage in barefoot running, chasing after animals until the animals would collapse. The Tarahumara tribe in Mexico engage in this type of endurance barefoot running to this day.
Barefoot running is a trending topic amongst runners. Some Olympic runners have even gone barefoot during sprinting and long distance competitions. Research has shown that many running shoes being made since the 70s have excessive padding that isn't really necessary.
