In truth over 80% of the world’s population eats insects. Anyone who eats processed food -- peanut butter, cereal, tomato soup, etc. -- eats roughly 500 grams of insects a year. While it may be surprising, there are many benefits for including bugs into one’s diet.
While the meat industry requires a lot of energy to operate and often resorts to ethically questionable practices, insects provide humans with as much fat, protein, calories and vitamins as pork, chicken or beef. The waste produced by insects is also far less abundant and less environmentally detrimental than that produced by cow dung.
While the squeamish may be averse towards eating bugs, the statistics show that incorporating insects into one’s diet is both a healthy alternative and economically beneficial.
