Toby Shapshak Gives an Enlightening African Innovation Speech
Janelle Savel — March 17, 2014 — Keynote Trends
Toby Shapshak gives an educational African innovation speech that alters the preconceived judgments one may have about Africa.
Shapshak mentions that 'pay-as-you-go' was an idea that stemmed from Africa 15 years ago, now it is one of the most prominent influencers in global economic activity. He wittingly hones in on the point that while Africa may be perceived as the 'dark country' -- appearing on a global night-visioned map to be less lit than the other countries -- people in Africa aren't as consumed in digital media as a past time. Instead they are busy solving real problems and creating change in the world such as the African SMS service that works on almost every mobile phone and allows people to pay bills, make payments, buy groceries and more.
Shapshak says that Africa is responsible for real innovation; innovation not in the sense of launching new products but solving real issues. Africa creates things that people end up using, and Shapshak is trying to change people's perception on the country, by having them recognize the impact Africa in innovation.
