The speaker obtained a C-Stream Baccalauréat and began studying mathematics and economics at the École Normale Supérieure after taking science-based preparatory courses. After writing a thesis on wealth redistribution at École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) and the London School of Economics, he was awarded his PhD.
From 1993 to 1995, he worked as an assistant professor at MIT's Department of Economics. He joined the French National Center for Scientific Research in 1995 and became a professor at EHESS in 2000. In 2006 he also became the head of the Paris School of Economics, which he helped establish.
