Bloom began his studies at McGill University, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in psychology. In 1990, he took his Ph.D in Cognitive Psychology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research career began shortly afterwards at the University of Arizona, where he taught psychology and cognitive Science. Since 1999, Bloom has held his current position at Yale.
Among awards received by Bloom are the Stanton Prize from Society for Philosophy and Psychology and the Lex Hixon Prize. He has also held various distinguished visiting professorships, such as the Templeton Lectureship at Johns Hopkins University and the Nijmegen Lectureship at the Max Planck Institute at the University of Nijmegen.
