Russell achieved a Ph.D in Biological Chemistry from the University of London in 1987. He is currently a university professor of surgery and is also the Founding Director of the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. Aside from his teaching position, he is also the Executive Director of the Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Initiative Inc. and a consultant for UPMC's International and Commercial Services Division. Russell has also founded three biotechnology companies called, ICX Agentase LLC, NanoSembly LLC and O2Cyte LLC.
Russell’s laboratory has achieved many notable discoveries including how to make polymers from enzymes as well as incorporating enzymes into bulk polymers. Throughout his career he has achieved numerous awards, including three Carnegie Science Center Awards for Excellence between 2000 to 2006 and in 2009 he was named as one of the 'Top 100 People who will change America.'
