Yann Martel is a Canadian author who has given speeches on creative writing. He is best known for his novel 'Life of Pi,' which was later turned into a film. As a young adult, Martel traveled to Iran, India and Turkey. He studied Philosophy at Trent University in Peterborough.
Before writing Life of Pi, Martel spent a lot of time doing research. He visited many zoos and read many religious texts. He also visited religious buildings from all different faiths.
In his speeches about writing, Martel stresses the importance of reading. He claims that books make the best teachers for young writers. He encourages people to read the classics and explore genres that are unfamiliar to them.
