As a scholar, she has a Ph.D. in Health Psychology and graduate certificate in Women's Studies. For 15 years she worked as a faculty member at Stony Brook University in the Women's and Gender Studies Program. During this time she also spent 2 years as Executive Director of the Women in Science and Engineering program. She was also the Faculty Director of the Living Learning Center on Human Sexual and Gender Development. In December 2014 she completed a graduate certificate in Religious Studies and Education at the Harvard Divinity School.
