Silver attended the University of California where she received her BS and Ph.D in biochemistry. She was a NIH Pre-doctoral fellow here before becoming a Post-doctoral Fellow at Harvard in the biochemistry department as well. She was first an Assistant Professor at Princeton University before moving to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute at Harvard where she was a Professor of biological chemistry and molecule pharmacology. There, Silver was awarded for her leadership role with the Mentoring Award.
It was in 2004 that she founded the Department of Systems Biology at Harvard. She is currently a core member of the Harvard University Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering.
