In 1999, he was awarded with the National Institute of Health International Research Scientist Development Award and in 2005 he received the prestigious NIH Director's Pioneer Award. In 2009 he was chosen as the National Geographic Emerging Explorer, and in 2010 he was recognized as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum.
