Mae 'Carol' Jemison is a NASA astronaut as well as an American physician. She was the first African American woman to have traveled into space in 1992. After getting her medical degree, Jemison served in the Peace Corps. Jemison was also interested in the relationship between social sciences and how it interacts with technology, forming a company dedicated to researching these potential applications of technology to every day life.
At the age of 16, Jemison entered Stanford University and graduated in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering while simultaneously fulfilling her Bachelor of Arts degree in African and Afro-American Studies. In 1981, Jemison obtained her medical degree from the Cornell Medical College, while taking modern dance lessons.
Jemison is also an active public speaker who strives to promote science and technology as well as highlighting the importance of arts.
