Francis got his start at the University of Virginia with a B.S. and a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Yale. He then followed up with an M.D. from the University of North Carolina.
Some of his biggest accomplishments include his identifying the genes responsible for cystic fibrosis, Huntington's disease and a few others, as well as leading the Human Genome Project which successfully mapped out all human DNA and determining aspects of its function.
