Gupta attended Haryana Agricultural University for a master's degree before obtaining a Ph.D. degree in management from Kurukshetra University in 1986. He was the founder of the Honey Bee Network, which is dedicated to creating a community that recognizes and rewards local innovators. He is the executive vice chair of the National Innovation Foundation and President of SRISTI. He is currently a professor in the Centre for Management in Agriculture. He holds honorary professorship from the Tianjin University of Finance and Economics.
He is respected in many international circles, receiving recognition in the form of fellowships, visiting faculty offers and countless management etching awards. He has been chosen as one of the 50 Pioneers of Change by India Today. Gupta has also written several titles, including 'Getting China and India Right'
