As an authority on visual and sensory illusions, Seckel often relates his interest on human perception to his works. He studies and experiments with illusions to understand how the processes that go into them. Seckel authored several books about the visual illusions. One of which is 'Masters of Deception: Escher, Dali, and the Artists of Optical Illusion,' which showcases the many works of prominent visual illusionist.

Seckel founded the Southern California Skeptics (SCS) in 1984, where he became the spokesperson for science and the paranormal. He wrote about investigative supernatural claims from a scientific perspective. Seckel was the first person to create the world's first free interactive website on illusions in 1994.
