Tim McCarthy is a Professor at the Harvard Kennedy School. He graduated from Harvard and received his PhD in history from Columbia University. McCarthy specializes in social movements and modern human rights.
McCarthy discusses the potential mistake in foregrounding same sex marriage in the fight for gay equality with engaging clarity. He discusses a law which was passed in Arkansas which forbids single people from adopting children. This in turn prevents all gay couples from forming a family, as they aren't married in the traditional sense. The law has put pedophilia and homosexuality in the same bracket.
Although the fight for same sex marriage is important, McCarthy argues that it is not the best strategy for gay equality. The concept of marriage only applies to a certain demographic and leaves many issues in the shadows of the campaign.
