Drawing connections between theater and warfare, Bryan Doerries talks about the healing power of plays in this Theater of War keynote.
Referring back to works of Sophocles, in particular the tragedy 'Ajax,' Doerries demonstrates how through theater soldiers are able to confront the emotions that burden them by witnessing and relating to the narratives of characters that have shared their experience.
People are comforted by the things that bring them together. Theater of War brings ancient Greek texts to soldiers and veterans in order to encourage the discussion of issues that affect the military today. As Doerries says at the end of his speech, "theater is an ancient military technique that can raise awareness, erode stigmas, promote understanding, healing and resilience and stir fellow citizens to action."
