Dr. Sandro Demaio delivers a talk on malnutrition that is geared toward highlighting the impact of the problem both on the individual and the global level. The talk features some examples and action plans that are being taken to address the issue in a healthy and sustainable manner. The speaker is the CEO of EAT — a not-for-profit organization that aims to catalyze a food system transformation.
The talk on malnutrition mainly centers around the problem at hand. According to Dr. Sandro Demaio, much of the planet is suffering a double burden of it. He backs this up with some troublesome statistics — 1.9 billion people are overweight or obese, 1 in 3 mouthfuls of food is wasted, and 1/3 of global greenhouse gases come from the food sector. Demaio identifies the commodification and homogenization of food to be one of the reasons for this double burden.
Today, a lot of the public health challenges we face are linked to climate change, rising social and economic inequality, persisting hunger, tendency to be overweight or obese, etc. During his brief talk on malnutrition, Demaio identifies some actions plans that are initiated to address and confront these issues as they arise. On the individual level, one needs to reevaluate their daily dietary intake and consider sources of food. On the public level, intergovernmental organizations like the United Nations have adopted strategic action plans. Dubbed 'The Decade of Action on Nutrition,' the six-point project focuses on ending malnutrition in all its manifestation between 2016 and 2025. This applies to all countries, is impact-focused and, of course, time-bound. The six points include fostering sustainable food systems for healthy diets, aligning agreeable health systems, social protection and education, improving trade and investment, establishing safe and supportive environments for nutrition at all ages, and strengthening nutrition governance and accountability.
By adequately and systematically addressing these issues — whether that be through action networks, smart commitments or double-duty actions, one is substantially transforming and bettering the overall quality of life.
