Mindy Scheier's Talk on Adaptive Clothing Considers Disabilities
Riley von Niessen — March 27, 2018 — Keynote Trends
Mindy Scheier, a fashion designer and the founder of the Runway of Dreams Foundation, recently delivered a talk on adaptive clothing for TED that highlights how it can help people living with disabilities in more ways than one.
Scheier began to consider different ways to design adaptive clothing when her son Oliver, "who has a rare form of muscular dystrophy that causes physical disabilities, wanted to wear jeans to school like his friends." By creating clothing that her son could feel confident in, she saw him flourish, as he was able to take on a new form of independence. To create her son's jeans, she made some adjustments to the fastenings so that he could put them on himself with ease, without needing any assistance.
Throughout her talk on adaptive clothing, Scheier considers how fashion positively impacts people, the history of creating clothing for those with disabilities and seniors, and ways that the industry can be adapted to suit more diverse needs.
