Ella Martin, a young actress and leader, explains the importance of taking action early on in her talk on activist efforts.
To start out her speech, Martin sings a song to engage her audience and to introduce the subject that she'll be exploring -- as she targets the idea of waiting until one is grown up to tackle things that are considered to be a part of the adult world. Although she accepts that she still has a lot to learn, she's been eager to gain as much knowledge as possible, and consider the world that lays outside of her predominately white community. By taking part in Broadway For All, a program that brings together teens from various socio-economic and cultural backgrounds, Martin has learned of the many difficulties that some of her peers have faced in reaching their goals, simply due to their differences in background.
Once she realized how her peers were impacted in theater due to this, she was inspired to campaign for more diversity in her school drama club, and started conversations with her teachers about how this could be changed. Throughout her talk on activist efforts, Martin shows how much power young people really have, as well as the importance of constantly pushing for inclusion, and always being aware of how discrimination impacts different environments.
