In her speech on hiring practices, human resources executive Regina Hartley explains why companies should hire candidates who don't at first glance have the perfect resume.
She identifies two kinds of applicants -- the "silver spoons" and the "scrappers." It is the latter she encourages companies to hire. While they might not have been bred to succeed with access to every advantage in life, their triumph over difficulties (rough childhoods, learning disabilities and tragedy) often results in growth, ambition and sound determination. This gives them the ability to tackle adversity in a productive way, which is particularly valuable in an evolving workforce. The speaker encourages people to "choose the underestimated contender, whose secret weapons are passion and purpose" in her speech on hiring.
