Moriba Jah Discusses the Importance of Monitoring Objects Moving in Space
Daniel Johnson — November 22, 2019 — Keynote Trends
Moriba Jah gave a keynote discussing the importance of monitoring space traffic. Jah is a space environmentalist and TED fellow. He also created ASTRIAGraph, which is a system that tracks and predicts objects in space. Moriba continues to work to crowdsource ASTRIAGraph, in order to make space safer and available to future generations.
Jah opens his keynote by outlining the fact that he is an astrodynamicist, which involves studying and predicting the trajectory of objects in space. He continues to outline the need for tracking objects in space, due to the impact these objects could have on satellites. Moriba Jah states that there are approximately half a million objects in space, and humans only track about 26,000 of these objects.
Jah continues his keynote by outlining how orbit systems are essentially space highways, but without any overarching rule system. This is why he created ASTRIAGraph, which serves as a crowd-sourced, space monitoring system. Currently, ASTRIAGraph takes information from multiple sources and displays it in one map. Moriba concludes his keynote by stating that if we don't monitor space, then we could potentially not be able to use it in the future.
