Speaker Eleanor Longden shares her personal story in this schizophrenia speech. Longden looks at schizophrenia in a new way and talks about how to deal with this life changing condition.
Longden was in college when she began hearing voices in her head. After a friend insisted that she seek medical attention, she saw doctors and psychiatrists, and was diagnosed with schizophrenia. The more judged she felt, the more voices she heard. Eventually the voices began to give her instructions. They asked her to do things like pull out some hair and dump water on a teacher. She did those things, but knew she was in real trouble when they asked her to harm herself.
Longden began to realize that the things the voices said were often related to traumatic life events she had experienced. She began to view them as a source of insight into solvable emotional issues. She started to look for metaphorical meanings in the things the voices said.
She has found her way back to mental health, and appreciates all of the compassion and support that she received from family, friends and doctors.
