In his rural healthcare speech, Dr. Sanjeev Arora discusses the work his organization Project ECHO is doing. Project ECHO's vision is to improve healthcare for underserved patients all over the world, and fast. Dr. Arora works to treat Hepatitis C in particular, as a liver disease specialist. 170 million people are infected with Hepatitis C, but only 2% are treated. If things continue the way they are, it is expected 20 million will die from the disease.
As the director of Project ECHO, Dr. Arora has four principles in place to accomplish their mission. They use technology like video conferencing and broadband Internet to make medical information more accessible to community healthcare practitioners, who will then be able to treat more people locally. They have a disease management model in place where best practices are standardized. They have a case-based learning approach, where clinicians learn through guided practice. They also have a web-based database to track patient progress.
