Dianna Cohen is a visual artist, environmentalist and one of the individuals behind the Plastic Pollution Coalition. As an artist who works with plastic bags to create different sculptures and installations, Cohen has witnessed the devastating effects of single-use plastic items on a firsthand basis. Realizing that plastic cannot break down except into smaller pieces, she was motivated to put an end to humans’ use of single-use plastic materials and objects. Her speech identifies eighty to ninety percent of the world’s oceans’ waste as being plastic. Cohen’s speech also shares the purpose and goals of the Plastic Pollution Coalition, arguing that raising awareness and educating individuals on alternative options to plastic are two methods that can make a powerful difference in the world today. The Plastic Pollution Coalition encourages the world’s population to refuse the consumption disposable plastics.
