Anyone who's ever had a goal (read: everyone) knows the feeling of hitting a barrier and not being able to stick with it, so Sean Young's persistence talk uses a scientific backing to try to get to the bottom of the problem and offer up solutions. As a behavioral psychologist, Young has discovered that the inability to stick with one's projects and goals isn't because of a lack of will or motivation — it goes much deeper than that.
The problem with thinking about lack of persistence as a personal deficiency is twofold. For one, it simply makes people feel bad about themselves. But beyond that, it simply isn't back up by science.
Young's strategies can equally be applied small, relatively unimportant things as well as bigger, more crucial ones. It works for getting oneself to stick with a hobby, and it works equally as well for getting someone to stick with medication.
