Nate Silver is a statistician and writer. He developed PECOTA, a system for forecasting the performance and potential of Major League Baseball players. His blog FiveThirtyEight is published by The New York Times.
Silver explores the societal effects of racism in voting. Through a series of surveys, he discovered that racism can be predictable. It was found that several states maintained a certain view on otherness. For example, Arkansas and Tennessee answered that race would in fact affect the choice come election time.
Silver suggests that town planning and social interaction could promote tolerance. In transferring a student from a red state to a blue state, the youth could be open to experiencing neutral or positive interactions with a different race. To take this a step further, creating mixed race neighborhoods would cripple the alienation of otherness.
