Researcher Lisa Ma Discusses Her Work With Ethnographic Research
Rebecca Byers — February 16, 2012 — Keynote Trends
Speculative designer and researcher Lisa Ma discusses her work studying fringe culture and designing customized services that link the mainstream and fringe groups.
Lisa Ma attempts to challenge the concept of normality by creating personal experiences that attempt to understand the "values, beliefs and talents of the fringe." Lisa Ma also attempts to see if these niche services and companies have any mainstream value.
Ma's research has also expanded into more conceptual theories, such as stranded airport passengers who, while not exactly being a fringe group, do qualify in a theoretical sense in terms of time. Working with activists (opposed to the expansion of Heathrow airport) who owned a bike shop in a village close to the airport, Lisa Ma was able to create a service where stranded passengers are taken on bike tours of the villages close by.
