This heart health keynote by Richard Weller examines the possible link between cardiovascular health rates and geographic exposure to UVB rays from sunlight.
Richard Weller is a dermatologist, which makes it odd that he would be studying heart health. However, in this particular case, heart health relates to dermatology because of the link between chemicals released from the skin during exposure to sunlight.
The theory is that nitric oxide (which is a chemical transmitter found in the skin) is released by UV light. The more nitric oxide is released from our skin, the more we benefit in areas like blood pressure.
While still in the research stage, this potential discovery could help explain why people in places like Scotland have worse overall cardiovascular health than people in places like Australia.
