In this brief Eric Kandel speech, the Nobel Prize-winning neuropsychiatrist discusses the idea of reductionism, the relation of the heart and brain and the popular notion of a "mind" separate from the brain.
Eric Kandel talks of the residual issue of determining to what degree the acknowledgement of all mental functions emanate from the brain. According to Kandel, people want to believe in a mind separate from the brain, something he says he has not found any evidence to support.
Kandel also touches upon the relation of this discussion to Freud, who long ago said that most of our mental lives are unconscious. Although, he says, lots of decisions are better made unconsciously than consciously.
